I haven’t had much to say lately, and I’ve fallen into the trap that I hate most about bloggers and blogging – failure to update.

That being said, there’s not much to write about in terms of updates.
My family is well; everyone is healthy and happy.
My friends are awesome.
Work is good; I can’t complain about much beyond my hellish commute.
The few friends I had in Japan are all safe, as are their families.

I’ve been cooking a lot more; trying a lot of new recipes and working with new ingredients. I’ve been going to more shows, and I’ve been making travel plans for the year. I’ve been taking a lot of pictures, and I’ve been listening to a lot of music.

Other than that, not too much to tell.

It spring – stop reading the internet and go out and play!

52 in 52

Last year I challenged myself to read 52 novels over the course of 52 weeks. I kept a list of books I completed, and published that list as a page on this blog. This year I challenged myself to make 52 new recipes over the course of the year – but instead of turning this into a food blog, I started a new project where I can keep track of all the recipes I tried – as well as what worked and didn’t work about each one. I love the freshness of new year, the unblemished promise of another year and another chance to make change.

With a little over a week to go, I finished my 52 in 52 challenge! WHOO HOO.
I have decided that next year I am going to make 52 new recipes in 52 weeks. Starting with bread. And not just any bread, but bread from Tartine.

Last year I set a number of goals for myself: I wanted to read more; I wanted to travel more; I wanted to feel like I was an active participant in my life and not just watching the time pass; I wanted to try dating; and I wanted to get to know myself a little better. And oh boy, did I ever.

I’m so close to my reading goal, I’m not even worried about picking up another book right away. Its a nice feeling. I’ve had the opportunity to hit up New York, Colorado (twice!), Texas, Georgia, Nevada, Italy, and most of the rest of New England in the last year. I went on a few dozen (mostly terrible) dates, and I learned that honestly, I’m really ok being alone.

I’ll let you in on a little secret: for a long while, I hated being alone. I hated being the only one in a room or in an apartment. I hated not having someone nearby to talk to, or even just sit quietly next to. In the last year, I’ve gotten so good at being alone that there are days when I yearn for it. There are entire weekends where I can go without seeing anyone else, and I’m oddly ok with it.

Not sure what next year’s goals will be, but I’m pretty sure they’ll involve cooking new recipes and uploading my photos more frequently…(sorting 2000 photos is nothing to scoff at!!)

Oh Chicago, how I love thee:
For your beautiful skyline, your lovely Midwestern inhabitants, your friendly faces, your fast flat roads…but man-oh-man, does your weather suck on the Sunday before Columbus Day.

I was all excited that maybe *just maybe* this would be the year that I ran a Chicago Marathon that didn’t involve a hot day (the last two times I was there for this race, temps topped off in the mid to upper 80′s).

Early weather reports were saying mid to low 60′s and overcast – which would have been PERFECT. Now we’re up to 78 and sunny. Damn…I just can’t win, can I Chicago??

Young Einstein had it right though:
It could be worse. It could be raining.

I haven’t been writing much, and I think that could be because I’ve been reading like a librarian – which is a good thing, in my opinion. Though, I do miss writing.

Not too much has been happening lately. I’ve been running (marathon #3 is fast approaching), and I’ve been working a lot. I’ve really been enjoying the weather the last couple weeks. I love the warm(ish), dry transitional weather that slips in between summer and fall. Its perfect for running, and some of my favorite moments have been outside, running along the Revere boardwalk, smiling hello at the little Italian men sun bathing and walking their dogs. Good times, I tell ya, good times.
